Steve, buying a 1650 tub will not help as a 1550 and 1650 tub are the same. The engine block in the 1550 is one inch shorter than a 283 or 310 but the engine mounts are the same. A larger engine will fit but the transmission input shaft will have to be shortened one inch also to fit. All other components will fit with no changes.
Just wondering, why not use a 283 direct injection engine as it would be more dependable than a 310. Good Luck, and e-mail me if you need more help or have questions.
Paul

283 out of a 1650D is the same as 310.If you didn't have a hydra power and had the straight shaft you could make the bigger engine work or make a spacer plate between frame and transmission houseing and stretch it out a little.

I know the motor will bolt into the frame but the 310 is about a inch or so longer in the back of the engine .If you have a hydra power ,the chain coupler and sproketts may be to close together and the pto shaft to long.I have a 310 in my 1650 diesel out of a 1955.I thought maybe the two frames maybe are the same not shure.

Could I install a 283 ci in a 1550 tractor, or is a 283 engine the same length as the 310 engine? I want to boost my power from the original 60 horsepower for pulling.

Steve,

Any 7-main block (283/310) will fit, but it takes some elbow grease to do it. Others have mentioned the bellhousing tricks and such, but don't forget about the front of the engine either. The 7-main blocks have a higher deck height than the big brother 4-main block (88's for example), and both of these have higher decks than your 1550 block. The problem with the 1550 is that it never grew up. It uses the same bore centers and block length as the 77. Also the cylinder heads from the 77 to the 1555 were relatively the same---meaning poor flow and no options to upgrade. What this all means is that the water pump sits higher on the 7-main block engines so you'll need to go to a smaller fan. In my opinion, if you are going through that effort, either put a windmill on the diesel or go gas. A diesel without a windmill is useless in the pulling world. The 310 diesel head flows okay stock, but you can hit 100HP with a 310 gas with a 12 port head stock (2600RPM). Good luck with your project.

That was good information. Will the fan of the 310 engine touch the radiator at all? Will I be able to move the hydra power transmission back toward the firewall? Is there a shaft that I can shorten? Also, what do you mean by deck height?

Can be done, easier without the hydra power. Easiest with a 1650 tub when using the shifter. Straight shaft, just shorten and go ahead, I would rather use the 310, put one in several years ago, have since put one in a 77. Saw a 585 MM engine in a 880 so I guess anything is possible.
