Just took off the manifold on a oliver 550, intake gaskets are leaking. all i found were metal rings, and looks like someone used rtv. are new gaskets just metal rings?? how would they seal? if thats the case I will be using rtv on the intake.

First of all you did not say which 550. The gaskets for the 144 cubic inch engine are different than for the 155 cubic inch engine.

well the tractor is a white 244, but no ones knows that tractor, but was told that this is the same tractor as a 550 oliver, and they do look the same.

I cannot find any id on the engine. what i did was put high temp rtv on the intakes, let it dry and then put it on the tractor, running fine. i have no good machine shop, and this was easy, will see how long it lasts,

now i need to know what type of fluid to put into the trasnsmission.

I deo 99% of this from memory I know the 2-44 designator was a play on words so to speak. You have the late engine. 80-90 gear oil should work just fine but I can check later next week.

If I remember right, they're copper. The copper crushes between the manifold and head and creates a tight seal. Use a straight edge on the manifolds and the head. I don't think I'd take the head of unless it's obvious that the ports aren't flat.

I'd look more at the manifolds. If they are still solid but not flat anymore while bolted together, have them planed. If they are really bad, replace them. Donovan from Wisconsin

Yes, the manifold gaskets are the metal rings.

Put a straight edge square, or anything with a straight edge, across the intake and exhaust manifold. I'm sure you will find the exhaust ports sticking up a little more than the intake ports. That is why you had a intake leak.

With both manifolds bolted together, Have the ports planed, so they are all the same. Then with new gaskets and all four studs torqued to 20 ft. lbs., you should not have any more trouble.

I also recommend getting the manifold planed. A good machine shop job will cost you around $40.
