Don,

I just so happened to be doing some reading and stumbled upon a description of the problem you are having with your 1600. Basically the arcing between the rotor and the cap produces ozone. Ozone conducts electricity very well and so once it builds to a certain concentration, the energy will not only pass to the nearest terminal, but to other as well which creates a rough running engine.

This ozone needs to be vented from under the cap. What I am wondering is if the cover that seperates your cap from the distributor has the adequate vent holes. A few years ago I whipped up an billet aluminum distributor for an 880 I was working on. I would have to look again, but I believe there is a small hole that I copied over to allow it to breath (as was discussed here before). It would also be a good idea to verify that you cover between the cap and distributor is correct as well.

Good luck,
Eric

Are you talking about the dust cap under the rotor, covering the points? I havn't had a chance to try anything on it yet, I may take the old dist. cap and put a hole in it like J. Schweibert suggested. It's worth a shot.

I'm stumped otherwise. It runs for about 10 minutes, then it'll sput and sputter really bad. I take the cap off, spray it with either, and it runs fine untill the next time I start it. It started after cutting in the rain so I figure I must have some moisture hidden in there somewhere, but I dunno. That was 2-3 weeks ago.
