Oliver S-55 stalls when hot

My Oliver Super 55 (gas) seems to have decided to stall when the engine gets hot. In fact, it doesn't want to run at all unless I pull, and leave pulled, the choke. It has been suggested that this could be the result of a leaky intake manifold.

Has anybody else had this kind of problem with an Oliver Super 55 (gas)?

The gas feed system was just overhauled and moderized with a standard fuel filter and stop-cock fuel cutoff valve. The carb has also been recently rebuilt and is getting good flow.

my super 55 did that, and it took me about 5 years to find the problem. it was vapor locking, and the reason why i had a metal fuel fiter on it and it was below the exhaust manifold. i took the fuel filter off and use only the sediment bulb and it has worked find ever since.

Had a similar problem with my 55 after a complete rebuild. The problem was the routing of the gas line from the tank to the carb, turned out to be old fashioned vapor lock caused by the line being too close to the ex manifold.

Check the packing gland on the idle speed & high speed adjusting screws on the carburetor. If the packing is loose or not sealing you will be sucking air through the packing and/or gland.

Mystery solved.

The problem with my tractor was confirmed as being two different, but related problems.

The stalling when hot problem was actually caused by garbage in the gas tank that clogged up the gas new outlet. This reduced the flow and caused the tractor to stall by the time it got hot. The *temporary* solution was to blow through the gas hose by mouth and clear the obstruction. The next time it happens, I will open it up and remove the obstruction.

The "run only when choked" problem is definitely an intake manifold leak. This was confirmed by detaching the air cleaner hose at the air cleaner and blowing into it by mouth (with the tractor off). The air can be clearly heard hissing out of the manifold.

The 55 has a removable plug on the intake manifold that enables a screw in connector for a vacume gauge. this will eleminate any extra work. The gasket themselves are thin metal sleeves which seldom fail, worth a try.

hi dennis,

the float could be sticking or set way too low
since you had it apart. pulling the choke helps
it by cutting down on a extreme flooding condition. also your new modern fuel filter
might be too close to a heat source causing
vapor lock. good luck
