We have an Oliver 77 (S.N. 320494 Spec number not on the nameplate), I have both an Oliver parts manual and an Oliver service manual and I do not see a reference for specification numbers in either book, did 77"s have specification numbers?
I am trying to determine which pinion ratio my Oliver 77 has, I suspect it is 12/50 from looking at the Oliver parts manual, but again I am not sure. Is there a way to tell which gears are installed without pulling the top cover? I am going to a tractor junkyard, so what is my best bet for identifying a parts tractor with lower gears? Would it be easier to change the gears or just change the complete rear-end?
My goal is to reduce the speed of first gear, would my best bet be to get a rear-end from an industrial model?
Anyone who has any parts or suggestion please feel free to contact me.

You have a very early 1949 model tractor. In fact it is one of the first 500 tractors. At that time they did not use spec numbers. Do you have a C77? after the serial number. Back in those days they used letter codes instead of the later spec numbers. Now not to offend you within the hour I am leaving on a 2 week business trip. This is just a last minute check to see if there were any new posts. Myself, I would look for a rear end with the disk brakes. Which one do you like doing changing ring & pinons or doing a complete unbolt. Myself I don't mind doing ring & pinon swaps but double check that the ring and pinon you want will fit the transmission case you have since you have such an early one. If no one else helps you in the next 2 weeks get back with me the week of the 20th. O. K. J.

Thank you for the quick response, I do not see anything after the SN, so I guess I will have to pull the top cover. I have done a pinion change in an Oliver S-55, and it wasn't to bad a job. So I guess I could ge either way.
