Well this sounds like a couple hundred dollars question. I have a Cletrac with the Hercules IXK-3 engine. Has 25# pressure cold 15-20# pressure warm but, has no oil going through the oil filter unit. I"ve run the engine for probably 45 minutes at a time and no knocks whatsoever unknowing that it isn"t getting oil in the filter. Any thoughts????

Pressure bypass system. Oil filter clogged - will not pass any oil, relief valve bad - all oil will return to sump through valve instead of thru filter.
You are always pumping "unfiltered" oil to the bearings, with a fraction of pump output (above a minimum pressure) normally being filtered.
Lots of old engines operated that way.

Thanks for the response. So no big deal then?

Maybe the fix is no big deal, but fix it, like Larry says.
They would not have fitted a filter system to it if it did not need one!
Remember it is pressure feed, not splash and there may be all sorts of crud circulating, or waiting to circulate, in that engine. While a bypass system does not feed freshly filtered oil to all bearings, it should remove any damaging particles before they do too much damage. Without it, it will wear prematurely and that wear will be accelerated if the contaminants are pumped to the bearings again and again with no chance of being removed.

Thanks....I pulled off the filter unit from the block and found a piece of silicone in the hole leading to the tube that runs up through the filter. I cleaned a hole that was plugged (I think) in the engine block closest to the generater. It goes at an angle toward the rear of the block. I also blew out these passages with air. I reinserted the filter and now it is getting oil but after running for 10 minutes and sitting off for maybe 5 minutes I loosened the filter and not much oil came out but some did meaning there is now oil going into the filter. It just seems like oil would be streaming out unless it drains back to the block pretty fast. I need to read my manual for I see no way to adjust the pressure as I recall reading. Oil pressure didn't change after cleaning passages. I just have two slotted plugs on the unit that runs from the block to the filter, no check valves or such. I do have a spring and check ball on the oil filter drain that I think is functional. Sorry for the long descriptions and I appreciate the correspondance to my questions....Thanks again M.Stone

Well you should try to fix it.Most likely the restrictor is plugged or someone installed the filter wrong,so no need to go inside the engine.Your oil preasure will go down some if fixed.
