My family purchased an oliver tractor in the early 1940s. I have incorrectly believed that it was a 1928 model. I would like to find out what year the tractor was built. The rear wheels were about 5 feet in height. The wheels were lugged and the lugs were about six inches in width. The front wheels were close together, were solid metal and were somewhat sharp at the inner edge. The motor was four cylinders and was driven by a magneto and had no battery. It was cranked by pulling the crank to the top fairly slow and when the crank was just beyond center at the top there was a sizable clicking noise and the motor would start (or not). There was no fast cranking as was done with automobiles. By the way the crank could kick hell out of you if the spark was not set properly. This tractor is still on the farm that I grew up on but now belongs to someone else. If you can help me with the year that this tractor was produced I would appreciate it. I am writing a book and would like to correctly describe the tractor.

If it had a lever to set the spark it would be an 18-27. The later ones did not use this system.

Art, Oliver built three tractors that were 4 cylinder and had the front wheels close together. We call that style "row crop".

The model 60 row crop was built from 1939 to 1948, but it was smaller and most of them had a starter. I do not think this is the tractor you are asking about.

The tractor you most likely remember was a 18-27, built from 1932 to 1938. Or it could have been a 80 row crop that took the place of the 18-27. The 80 was built from 1938 to 1947. Both of these tractors look amost alike, unless you know what to look for.

Like I said I would guess it was a 18-27. (18 drawbar horsepower, 27 horsepower on the belt)

I hope this helps in the information for your book.
