Well, I am on the short rows for my Oliver 1800 rebuild. I finally have the hyrdo-drive rebuilt and have all the parts. I put the pistons in the hand tightened the rob bolts then put the engine in the frame. Last night I started tightening the rod bolts and had to use a couple of extensions. Some how using my hand to "balance" the head of the wrench changed the torque dynamics because I snapped one of the rod bolts. That is $10.47 down the drain!!!!!

I am going to pull the engine and torque the rod bolts without the frame interference. That should make things much easier.

Jim

Did the holes in the rods have a small bevel or chamfer to the edge on them? If I remember correctly, some rods were made without the bevel or break in the edge. The resulting sharp corner interefered with the radius between the body and head or the rod bolt. The stress riser cancause the head of the rod bolt to pop off. I may be wrong but it might be worth checking just in case.

That"s entirely possible that it broke off not form the twisting, but pushing against the side. Most mechanics, in order to change the shocks in car that the piston has threads on it, they will put a socket on a breaker bar and rock it back and forth a few times and it"ll snap off. That"s about what you did with the extension(s), put too much side strain on and it just let go.

Refresh my mind a little bit> I need the serial number of your tractor and I think I need to contact WFE-2. I think you need to check one other thing before you break another one. Do I have your phone number. I will be back later this evening. J.

I'm not certain what type of torque wrench you have, but are you positive you set it to ft-lbs. and not N-m. I've seen a co-worker do that with rather ugly results.

When was the last time you calibrated your torque wrench? Just adding an extension should not have caused a problem unless something was really a miss.

Good questions.

The Torque Wrench is a brand new 1/2" drive Craftsman torque Wrench. This is the second time I've used it. I double checked to ensure I was on ft/lbs. I plan to return the torque wrench to Sears tomorrow for a test.

If the rest have been over-torqued that much, I would be changing them ALL again. The risk of a leg out of bed makes it imperative, I would have thought.
My 2p, for what it is worth.

I already have them ordered!!! They should be here tomorrow afternoon.

Luckily this was the only bolt that didn't Click and I only tightened the bolts on two pistons.

Wow, you must eat your Wheaties to twist off one of those rod bolts. Better go back and reinstall all of the others too to make sure none are too tight.
