550-adding second muffler

This may sound strange, but I am seriously considering putting a second muffler on the exhaust pipe. When I got the tractor it seemed very loud. So I replaced the muffler. It made no difference. Now, if I hold the old muffler over the exhaust pipe, it really cuts down the sound. Other than looks, is there any harm in doing this? Or any other suggestions on how to quite the tractor down a bit?
Maybe if I rig up enough in-line mufflers I will have a stealth 550. ha ha
As always, thanks!

How far above your head is the new muffler? If it's even with your head or below, that's why it's so loud. Put an extension on it and it should be good.

The correct muffler should be below the hood with the exhaust pipe up above head level. They are a little noisey, it's those 42 horses talkin to ya!

I must confess, our Masey 165 needed a new muffler as it was spewing soot all over the side of the hood where it came out the side. Put the new muffler on, not even cut off like the old one to fit it in the shed, and it's louder than the old one too. I was dissapointed, but I wear earplugs on everything anyways, so it doesn't bother me. Must be that 40 some horses again...

I can't stand to drive our 1855 without earplaugs at all, but the rest aren't nearly as noisy. I had a temporary straight pipe on the 18, and I never noticed a difference once I fixed the manifold and put the muffler back on!!
