Non-running HG-42 Last stupid question

I bought a 1941 Cletrac and have starting issues.
I have spark but now I think I may be cranking it in the opposite direction....No oil pressure at cranking speed. Looking at the fan from behind it is cranking counter clockwise. It has a 12 volt conversion and the person I bought it from just put a new solinoid on it. I've been cranking it with a negative ground but I just hooked it up for a second with a positive ground and sparks. Is there such a thing as a positive ground solinoid and I'm wondering if the sparks were from frying my charging system by a direct ground to the frame with the positive cable? Any ideas would be appreciated and thank you Old for past replys....

Mike,
Your engine is turning in the right direction.
You could have checked by dropping it in bottom or reverse gear and operating the starter momentarily (if it is in a position where it can move slightly) so you could confirm the motion, even if it was only taking up slack in the drive line.
As Old says, if you have an alternator (AC) generator you have almost certainly fried the diode pack. If it is a dynamo (DC) generator, it may need repolarising or you may have welded the regulator contacts together (not too likely if it was only connected for a moment).
Tricks to get it going? Fill with hot water a couple of times to simulate a warm engine.
Dry out plugs with gas burner and insert while still hot, try to start immediately.
Drive engine with a flat belt if it has a pulley, but be sure it drives in the right direction - or no oil pump operation.
Check timing by removing No 1 plug, turning engine to TDC on compression stroke, when mag impulse should trip. To set it roughly, retard mag, turn engine to "just past side" of TDC on the compression stroke, then advance mag until impulse trips. Going a fraction past TDC will be close enough for initial starting, but will avoid backfiring.
Check that #1 plug is firing when #1 is on compression (plug leads may be 180 degrees out).
Make sure you have copper core plug leads and non-resistor plug tops as you have a magneto system here.

Well if that 12 volt system has an alternator on it, you will now need to go buy a new one. Yep you fried it the moment you hooked up the battery to + ground. Those engines have a low oil preassure so you may not see any preassure when tunring it over. Starkers turn the same way no matter how the battery is hooked up. Thats one reason its so easy to change a system from 6 volts to 12 volts. If the starter was turning back wards the engine wouldn't turn over because the bendex wouldn't slide out to the flywheel. If you need more help I can scan pages from an owners manual I have for an OC-3 which is almost the smae machine just a little newer and almost every thing is the same. E-mail is open
