The pto shaft in my Cockshutt 30 always ran continous until recently, now it has stopped, I can turn it by hand about one third of a turn. It makes a solid sound when it stops in both directions. Seems like there might be a slight growl in the transmission. Can anyone help?

If it is a live PTO, you may need to remove it and take the clutches apart and clean them real good. If it is not a live PTO you could have what I am working out on a 20 and that is a gear with teeth missing. As for a slight growl in the rear end, most of these tractors have a whine or growl a lot of times. Hope this helps, good luck,,,Dave

Did you ever have the engine out? The drive shafts are arranged something like a solid drive shaft and a sleeve around it. There are shims under the engine. I'm just guessing, but it strikes me that if the shims are missing, something could be binding up.

At least, that's how mine are arranged. Mine have live PTO--says so right on the fender. Yours may be different.

You've also not mentioned the lever to engage the PTO. Is it pulled up? That may make a difference.

I don't know too much about it, just what I learned from running it and performing an engine swap. Still looking for a book...
