Hello, I have several questions regarding "gear growl"
I have an Oliver 1450 diesel, and it growls when moving.

Could this be from the nuts on the pinion shaft loosining up?
Is this even possible on a 1450?
How hard is it to tighten them back up?
How would I go about tightening them up? Or even
What is a pinion nut? where is it found? and How do I access it?

If it were the pinion nuts that loosened up causing this, would it hurt the tractor to tow it home? Its about 2mi away from my house.

You are dealing with A Fiat built unit. I sent you 2 e-mails not let me know if you did not receive them and if not we will find a Plan "B". J.

I've found the problem, the shaft that comes from the transmission (don't know the name) that connects to the diff via a gear, has a BAD bearing, bad as in rollers flopping around loose in the bearing race. to remove the bearing I believe requires removal of the diff (correct me if I'm wrong) and... I'm not sure how to do that,
We're going to buy a shop manual, but if anyone has suggestions we would appreciate them. it looks like you need to remove the whole tire/wheel/driveshaft assembly and then pull the diff out through the top. is that the required procedure for removing the diff, or is there a easier way to replace the bearing??
also does anyone know a place that might have these bearings available?? also I need some little "clips" for the pto lever, they run in a little slot on the sliding engager thing. one side is rounded and fits into the little slot on the engager, the other fits into the actual lever part.
Thanks,
Tom

The double nuts on the pinon shaft could have come loose, I am working on one now that it happened too.
