Well I picked up a thermostat for this 60 engine but it doesn't fit. The parts store books say it uses the same one as the 77, 88. etc but it just plain will not work. Does any body have the part number for the correct thermostat for a 60?? If I can get a couple part numbers then I might be able to cross them to the right one. Thanks

Thermostat part number is J 525 for the model 60. You need a thermostat in the cooling system to control the flow rate of the coolant through the radiator. Race engines, should they not use a thermostat or special water pump, will use a restrictor of some type in place of the thermostat. If it flows too fast, it does not loose temperature. Difference in temperature between the radiator top tank and bottom in a good radiator is about 5 degrees.
You need the restriction to keep the engine cooling system packed full of coolant. With a temperature gun and a pressure guage. Install the pressure guage in a drain plug opening in the crankcase. It will show some presssure when the thermostat is closed, then drop in pressure when it opens. Read the temperature and you know when the thermostat is opening.

Since you are dealing wiht an overheating problem and going back to the parts store pop a couple of those fair sized soft plugs out of the block and see how much hard build up you have at the bottom of the sleeves. One of the last ones I looked in was a 1/3 full and soaking or flushing was not going to move that stuff. We chiseled it out.

I did a vinagar flush on it this afternoon, I ran it till good an warm with the vinagar, then shut it down. Let it cool and it has been flushing with the hose for the past 2 hours. I also put in a new temp gauge since the old one would never read over 140. Maybe I have it now I will know the next time I put it to work. I still don't see how putting a thermostat in can help with the overheating problems
