Hello all, I've just purchased an oliver 1450 (yea the fiat one) from a friend, it ran real good, but the rear end siezed up on him, and he dosn't want to mess with it, so i've bought it. heres what he said happened:

he was heading towards the barn driving the tractor, and it just stopped, motor stalled, and tractor wouldn't move. he jacked the rear end up in the air, got the back wheels turning good, lowered her back down, started it up, took off, went about 5ft or so, did the same thing again, locked back up, so he dragged it off to the side of the road, and thats where is sits. he's had someone look at it, they said it could be a bearing in the rear end. to me it seems as though a bearing wouldn't just lock up solid and stop the whole thing dead. right now the starter needs to be rebuilt. but its just had a new hydrolic (spelling?) pump, and several other things, everything is in good mechanical condition other than the rear end being siezed.

also the pto shifter doesn't seem quite right he said.
perhaps something broke off it, and lodged in a gear??

my plans for now are to:
fix the starter to see if the engine will turn over (with clutch depressed)
dissasemble rear end to look for broken gears/something lodged somewhere.

Any suggestions will be welcome.

Thanks,
Tom

Had an old allis do the same thing except the clutch would start to slip instead of the engine dying. It was a gear tooth that would lodge in between the other gears and lock er up.

Thanks guys, davpal you're probably right, something lodged inside, perhaps part of the pto shift actuator (not correct term) because he said that it was hard to get the pto into gear, he had to get it just right for it to click in. perhaps something broke off of that, and got lodged lower in the case?
I don't think it cracked the case, because there wasn't oil everywhere.
but I may be wrong, as far as tractors go, I know VERY little. I know some about diesel engines, but little to nothing about final drive.

by chance, does anyone have instructions for dissassembling the rear end of this tractor, or perhaps an exploded parts diagram so I can see where everything goes??
and perhaps instructions, or ideas on fixing a starter motor?

Thanks.

I would bet something broke off and is getting lodged between the bull gears and the cast iron bottm of the rearend case. Be careful because if it happens too many times it will put a big crack in the bottom of the case.
