When did Oliver change from the 4 wire to 3wire
Hydro-Electric? Can a 4 wire cylinder be made to
work on a 3 wire system?

Thanks for the information. I will give up
the idea of using a 4 wire with a 3 wire
system.

The 4 wire is the No.3system and the 3 wire is the No.2 system. The No.2 was used on the later non super tractors and No. 3 was used on later production models.I think you have to rework the cylinders electromagnetic componets.

I am surprised at your answer. Now I know the tech articles in the fall hpoca newsletter need to have more details on early hydraulics. All fleetline super's & 3 digit series had 4 wires. Questions?

Before I answer that explain to me what you have in mind. The cast 3 wire cylinders have a higher pressure rating than the older 4 wire cylinders. Thw working pressure of the 4 wire cylinders was in the 1000 PSI range. The cast cylinders were in the 2000 PSI range. Now with safety in mind I will tell you 3 wire cylinders were introduced with the 1800 & 1900 in 1960. Can they be changed, I am not going to answer.

I have a 66 and a 1650
have accumulated 10-12 cylinders over the years never paying any attention to their construction. So now it would seem I need to sort them out and only use the cast three wires with the 1650, any will work with the 66
Hydral-lectric doesnt work on either one.
Is this a fair assumtion or am I all wet??

Ron Since you are also in Ohio look and see if you have any cylinders with the fingers and let me know.

I have one that I believe had the fingers at one time. They are missing now. The only diagram in the 66 parts book that matches is the first generation. I can take pics and send them if you like however the fingers are no longer there.

Have a 4 inch steel barrel cyl with a 3 pin plug. Don't know the psi rating but it also has a back-up washer for the piston O-ring. Any 20 to 50 year old cyl is capable of leaking internally which can be a safety issue. Easy to check, extend the cyl, remove the return line (rod side) coupler, if oil leaks out with a load applied, the cyl needs repair. With Oliver interlock system, cyl may not leak down, but sure can put blisters on hoses or cause one to burst.

Seems about right to me! We've only got 1 hydra-lectric cylinder but the wires are all rotted away and I removed the harness on the 1600, covered it with a plate off another doner tractor. We've been getting random cylinders here & there lately, some coming with things we buy like a JD cylinder that came on our Oliver plow (What a Shame!!!!) and a couple unknown's. We've got atleast 9 cylinders around the farm, maybe more. Some are a permenant mounting like on the haybine, the chopper, the spring tooth, and the rest are swapped when we need to but now we have enough that it rarely happens any more. May get a couple more from the bone yard just so we don't have to swap them around. Much easier to plug in and go.
