I just bought a 1959 Oliver 770. It pops through the exhaust. With the muffler off it is spuratic an loud. Does this sound like a burnt valve? Could it be a sticking valve? It looks like the head has been off recently. The compression from front to back is 135,150,150,135,150,160 PSI. Thanks for any help.

I'm 14 and just overhauled an oliver 88. that popping means your out of time or too much fuel. i was gettin gtoo much fuel and it was popping. it still popped after and i found that it was out of time. remove the oil pump and have the small offset facing the engine. turn it 3/16" to the right of the small oil hole and replace it. now it should be in time.

One other thing it could be is that its running on the lean side. What happens it you choke it a little. Does the popping stop?? If so you have fuel problem

It can possibly be a burnt valve or sticky valve?
First I"d remove the rocker arm cover and check the valve clearence between the rocker arms and valve tips. One or more valves may to tight and allowing it not to close all the way.
