I've been reading in the archives that you can change the PTO speed from 540 to 1,000 RPM and re-install the 540 PTO shaft thus turning it at 1,000 RPM.

Are the 540 & 1,000 RPM shafts the same spline size? Will a 1,000 RPM batwing mower shaft mate up to a 540 RPM PTO output shaft?

Here is a scan of the line drawing of the PTO as used on your 1850 tractor. As it is shown in the drawing, it is equipped with the 1000 RPM shaft. Note shifter #52 is positioned towards the front of the tractor engaging gear #50 to the driver #50 which has internal splines that engage with the output shaft.
If you attempted to install the 540 output shaft, it is longer (it extends to where the arrow #72 is pointing) thus it can not be installed as the lockout #45 can not be pushed back because the pin #43 will not allow the lockout to move back until the shifter is moved to the rear position which is 540 RPM. This prevents the 540 shaft from turning 1000 RPM. You can install the 1000 RPM shaft and shift it to 540, however I don't know why you would want to do that.
It was designed this way for safety. If someone has taken the unit apart and removed the lockout devices, then you could accomplish both speeds with either output shaft.

B A Star, I have printed up that scan for future reference. Thank you for taking the time to post it. Your answer and Don's answer were what I've been looking for. Do you have a copy of the procedure for changing out the output shafts?

Thanks a ton-

yes and no, you can install the shaft and not change speeds, but you cannot hook the 540 shaft to a 1000 implement. Doing this while bushhogging is by no means a good idea; only seen it happen once blades went through the wheels and tires on back. Consult the operators manual or someone who has done some tractor work.

Still don't get it. I've owned several tractors that the PTO speed was changed by engaging a lever.

So, in regard to the 1850, if the 540 shaft is re-installed after the PTO speed has been changed up to 1,000 RPM whats the difference? I'm not talking about running a rotary mower at incorrect speed. I'm asking about spline sizes.

A 1000 rpm shaft has 21 splines,540 is a 6 spline shaft. I'm not sure if the same shaft works from the 55 series or not. If they are the same, they pop up on ebay about once a week or so, they usually go for around $40 or so. You could also go to your agco dealer or a scrap yard to see if they have one.

I'm speaking of the output shaft on the PTO itself. Not the shaft that leads to the mowers gearbox.

Sorry for any confusion on that.

Either shaft will run at either speed. You can shift gears only with the shaft out if the safty plug is in.I have run augers ,balers and other low power 540 stuff with it in 1000 rpm.You can not do this with the 1650 and smaller tractors.
