I've looked in the archives and cant find a hint, so... my 550 won't lift the 3 pt. arms all the way up. Weight doesn't appear to be the problem. Using a 2 bot. plow, if I set the plow propperly to plow, the guide wheel won't clear the furrow to turn. On a 1 bot. plow it JUST barely clears. Pressure is good, new filters & fluid, and it's almost plowin' time again. Any pointers would be great.

You need to adjust the 3 point travel range.

To do that, unhook your plow. Next, with your engine running at about 1000 R.P.M.'s move the 3 point control to raise the 3 point clear up. Next, grab the lower 3 point arm and lift up. If you can lift it up more than 1 1/2 inches you will need to loosen the lock nut and adjust the turnbuckle located just to the left of the top link mount until you have about 1 1/2 inch free travel. Do not adjust it so you have no free travel.

That should take care of your problem.

thanks a million!!! it had a piece of flat stock in place of the turnbuckle. Looked right to me...took it off and moved the lever by hand and it woorked PERFECTLY!! Thanks again. It was sent to the shop twice to get fixed, and allthey did was take my money and lie.

I've about given up on taking old stuff to repair shops, unless they've got an old guy who actually worked on your model tractor "back in the day". And those places are getting few and far between- how many guys who were mechaniking in the 60's and 70's are still working? Most of them are hanging out on this board, and will diagnose the problem for free, like Oliver Fan did in this case. The young guys in the shops are just guessing (but feel obligated to guess rather than tell you they don't know), so you're better off getting manuals and trying to figure it out yourself. The exception is when the job is obvious, but you don't have the tools (or the manpower) to do it yourself.

I'm not sure about that Oliver Fan. You could be right...or it could be an internal hydraulics problem.

Here's my (2nd hand) experience with a 550 3pt:

Several years ago, my dad got a deal on a 550 diesel showing ~2500 hours, but the 3-point didn't work (very well). It would lift a little, but not much with a load and not all the way up.

It's been a few years, but it seems like the mechanic eventually discovered a bypass needle that was stuck partially open (thus not building adequate pressure on the 3pt).

Like I said, it's been a few years, and I don't exactly remember what the diagnosis was...I can ask him tonight and get back to you.

Nathaniel
