When first starting my 30, it runs oil presure off the 60 lb gauge and pushes oil out the filler tube and fittings. After running for a while it will idle down to about 25lbs. . How do I adjust the oil presure relief valve. In to drop or out to drop presure and how many turns? What should the presure be when first starting and does the weight of oil have anything to do with it? Former owner used 50W aircraft oil because of low ash content thus no smoke. Other than that it seems to run very well. It does pop out of reverse from time to time. Is that a major fix? Thanks in advance for your help.

If this is a gas Buda engine, here are a few items to check. First make sure the spring and valve are clean and not full of old dirty oil. They need to be clean and work free. One other thing to check is the cap screw that holds the timing gear thrust plate, if the bolt is to long it can push on the relief valve. Proper size is 7/16-14 x 9/16, soemtimes is an over haul this bolt is replace with one that is longer, and this bolt should be drilled. Normal oil pressure hot is 25 psi give or take a few psi. If you have a parts book, look at the cam shaft to see thrust plate and bolt,

Dave, Thanks for the info. Yes it is a Buda engine and I'll be back into it tomorrow.

First thing I would do it fill it with the oil you are going to use. Also maybe it is like the first 478 Hercules and some Army trucks. Do not rev the engine up untill it has warmed up a little bit. You turn the regulator (pressure adjusting screw) out to lower the pressure. Yes the weight of oil does affect the pressure. Start there. You know that lowering the pressure will also lower the oil pressure when it is warm.
