I'm resurrecting an 1850 354 perkins from the dead. Does anybody have opinion/facts on what should be used (if anything) on the headgasket when installing? I've heard two trains of thought from mech's. First, use the AGCO offered sealant for about $30. The second, avoid AGCO sealant and spray paint both sides of gasket with aluminum paint that is heat resistant. Thoughts?

Thanks for the reply!

I have leaned towards putting it on dry. If the AGCO sealant can be bought yet, I will use that around the push rod area per your suggestion.

Thanks!

Put it on dry! You may want to add a thin layer sealant in the push rod area. YOU will need to RETORQE it once it has warmed up and ran for a while. Make sure all the nuts and stud have clean threads and are lubricated. Questions?

J.,not knowing specs on rebuild, should he check protrusion, I'm not at all familiar with the Perkin's motor but since I own two of them now maybe I should get up to speed? I used copper sealant on my headgaskets they sealed just fine when I have done rebuilds the time I had trouble was when sleeve protrusion wasn't right wouldn't seal dry or wet. Always something, right? Thanks

Liner protrusion is what seals the headgasket. It is very important no matter if the engine is a wet sleeve (Oliver) or dry sleeve (Perkins)I may still have some genuine Perkins service bulletins on head gaskets for the various 354 engines. There are at least 5 different head gaskets and most of them are made to be installed dry.

Mr. Schwiebert,

I agree, I've never used any kind of sealant and never had a problem as long as I retorqued after warm up.

I put all new head bolts on my 1655. Can't say I have any experience with the 354 Perkins. Should they have new head bolts also?

The head bolts weren't that expensive. Just measured them up and went to the local Fastenall and got some good quality grade 8 bolts. The rod bolts-now thats a different story-$$$!
