I was reading the HPOCA magazine and was reading the article on the KGLO tractor ride. It says that they had "maidrites" cooked over cooked outdoors in a big black kettle. What the heck is a "maidrite" ? I hope it has nothing to do with what happens when a moving tractor meets a stationary bunny on the highway.

The article on the 500 and 600 gave me new respect for those tractors. I would like to see a restored one. I know where there is a restorable 500 sitting. But I can't imagine what it would be like looking for parts. Although here in Canada there are a lot of David Browns.

I am originally from eastern Iowa where maidrites are usually just seasoned, crumbled hamburger on a bun. There are Maid-Rite restaurants that are known for these sandwiches and their great ice cream shakes around the region and are spreading across the nation. I just moved to southern Iowa where I have stumbled across two new names for these sandwiches: scrambled hamburgers, and canteens, which are a local favorite here, cooked up by little old ladies in a small kitchen in an alley downtown and sold daily. Kind of funny how many names there can be for the same thing!

Maidrite is a loose meat ground beef sandwich. Some call them sloppy joe's. Maidrite is an Iowa original, regional favorite.

I was hunting on a farm in South Dakota last fall and the the farmer's wife invited us in for supper to eat "taverns" which was to me a sloppy joe.
