Have recently replaced bearings on steering worm gear shaft. Drove tractor home from mechanics was backing tractor up and steering has let go. When I turn the wheel the steering will free turn about 2 inches not engaging steering mechanisum.
My mechanic now has tractor back. He says the stops are worn out.(he Thinks). I would like to find a used steering box and shaft. The tractor has a loader but even without a load it steers like a tank. I have replaced front bushings and bearings and added grease. Can anyone out there help? I live in Canada and for some reason have difficulty in finding a company that will deliver to canada. Thanks for any help I can get. Ed.

A friend of mine is making great power steering units for 550's and super 55's. Hydrolic pumps that will run a loader and power steering if you need them. His work is very neet and clean.

Where in Canada are you? in reply to bashfull, 03-14-2006 05:58:29
Forgot to ask where in Canada you are located. I live in BC and happen to have family in Washington. I found it better to deal with customs face to face. However, I have had parts shipped directly to me, Maibach's in Ohio and Penner Bros. have shipped to me.

Do you have manual steering on this tractor? Loaders are hard on them from what I hear. You may only need to adjust the steering gear backlash to get rid of the free travel in the wheel. Are your tie rods loose or worn? Also, check for wear or looseness in the stay rods. If you have everything adjusted correctly, and good bearings it shouldn't turn hard.

I HAVE A 55 ALSO,HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS, AND HAD TO RE-BEARING MY GEARBOX TWICE BECAUSE OF THIS. THE LOWER BEARING WASN'T SEATED PROPERLY AND TOOK OUT THE lower bearing cage. This also let the pinion shaft (steering shaft) drop enough to let the gear pass the stop point. As long as the gears themselves are smooth there shouldn't be any need for another gear. just make sure the gears are lined up tooth to proper tooth so it top ends at the right point in both directions, and use good gear lube.
