550 with a few problems

about a month ago i purchased a 550 that had a few running problems (rusty gas tank, ignition system shot, etc.) after a few weeks of tweaking on it, coating the tank, installing an electronic ignition kit, and polarizing the generator for a neg. ground system, i finally got it going. After a few hours of light grading with a 6' blade, i noticed a few things.

1. fluid leaking out of inspection plate at bottom of trans. i pulled the plate and a rusty, watery, oily fluid came out, about a quart. the only thing i can guess is that this is trans/gear oil leaking through the shaft seal into the clutch area. does this make sense?

2. overheating. the first day i drove it for a few hours with no overheating problems, but i noticed a small bit of coolant coming out of the overflow hose. today, i got on it and began working the blade. after seeing the overflow hose pumping out a good amount of fluid, i drove back to the shed and shut it down. is it overheating? or should i try and find an overflow bottle/new radiator cap?

thanks for the help, this forum has been very helpful.

Yes I agree with what he fellas said. I have one of those ignitions on my 550 and it does change the timing a little. I ended up timing mine by ear. I really like those ignition systems.

Your coolant may have just been overfilled. If temperature gauge is working it will show overheating. It's now running warmer and coolant is expanding as it really heats up. I can't think of any place my super 55 didn't leak trans lube. Probably wait to split tractor to fix seals until pto becomes a problem.

forgot to mention, it diesels when i shut it off, could possibly be the timing. i trusted the timing setting from the previous owner..
thanks

If the timeing is off a little, it could run hot and deisel when you shut it down. My 1600 did when I first got it running, but after playing with the distributer I got it to run great. You said you installed a new electronic ignition? I've heard a few say that the timeing is different when you install one of these, but I have no experience w/ updating the system. I also can't say what the fluid is, but it sounds feasible.

thanks for all of the responses. it seems you confirmed my suspicions... the last paint job kinda glued the distributor in place, so i figured it'd be ok running the way it was, but i'll be a good boy and time it right...
