This is off topic but I figured it wouldn’t hurt asking here. I’m a senior in high school and I’m doing a final exhibition project. My project is on bio-diesel and how it is better for multiple reasons. I know all the facts about it but I was hoping if I could get anyone"s opinion on it and what they think of bio-diesel.

Email is open…
Thanks Phil

If you're running older engines, especially those with rotary injection pumps, it's the only way to go. With the reformulated fuel we were starting to have problems with seals leaking and throttle, governor shafts sticking. Went to 2% blend two years ago and have no problems.

One of my neighbors makes his own. His son did a university paper on it. The only problem with it in cold climates is it gels at a much lower temp, but it does burn very clean, and is easy on the engine ..... he swears.....

I can only speak to one aspect of it. If used routinely, I think it"s fine, though I don"t have personal experience with it. What I do know is it does not store well long term. In my line of work, we have backup diesel generators. We looked into going to bio-diesel and found that it contains bacteria that can contaminate the fuel over time, which can clog filters and generally run amuck.

They make fuel additives that take care of the bacteria. Even regular diesel that sets a long period of time can get a bacteria build-up. Especially in warm weather. Been there, done that.

I am totally in favor of bio-diesel. The main reason is that it is easier on engine components. What I mean by this is that when they reformalated diesel fuel they took out the sulfur what was actually a lubricant which than increased the wear on the components, and this is to get worse in 2007 when they will change the fuel again. By using bio with the fuel a lubriant is put back in naturally which saves on wear on the componets. I will say I do not think you will not see too much bio-diesel in the future until big oil figures out a way to control the market then and only then will it take off, it is all about the money.
