Where is the best place to chain on a 310 to lift if out? I looked it over and it doesnt appear to have an obvious lifting loops. I figure I'll ask before I do something dumb.
Thanks

To go on what Forgot said, there is a long PTO shaft that is driven by a hub bolted to the flywheel. The shaft goes all the way to the back, driving both the Hydraulics and the PTO shaft out the back. To pull it, you gotta take off the top cover (above the pto shaft) that is held on by 4 bolts.

There is a plug in there w/ 1/2" threads in it, you need to pull this out, then there is an O ring way inside, about 5-6" inside that MUST come out before you can pull the long shaft. If not, you'll be cussing and swearing and the tractor will win the fight.

You'll need a peice of threaded rod for the shaft also, both the plug and the shaft are 1/2" and you should use a peice a good 12" long or more. It may still want to stick, but put an impact on the rod (jam 2 nuts together on the end) to turn it a little and jar it loose. The splines will also have to be lined up w/ the hydraulic pump once it gets that far, and the impact comes in handy again there to turn it while you pull on it. As long as the O ring is out, it'll come but it may need some persuading.

Good luck!!

Not sure what you mean there. If I split the chain coupling I should be fine. Right?

The PTO shaft extends through the transmission of the tractor and out the the center of the input shaft, passes through the over and under and sets into a splinded hub at the center of the flywheel. The PTO shaft is easily pulled, but now might be a good time to invest in an after market repair manual. They are relatively cheap at $25-$35 and available online or at ag centers.

If your tractor has a PTO, you must pull the PTO shaft before pulling the engine.

Yes, use the two bolts sticking up out of the head and I always use 1/2" chain by putting a link around the bolt and take a 1/2" nut on the bolt.

There should be 2 head bolts w/ threads sticking out the top, those are the lift points. When I pulled the engine out of my 1600, I took some nuts the right size and welded a length of chain to them. They held fine, and I plan to hang onto them for a while. You could also find a ring for lifting electric motors or whatever, and use a long coupler nut if they are male threads.

Pa mike, I can't remember the exact holes I used when I R&R'd the engine from my 1755,but I used lift hooks from a 350 chev. You'd be surprised, alot of auto makers don't use them,so good to have around!Salvage yards have lots of these laying around.~brad
