Made it all the way to South Bend and back in two days and got the new tractor home last night. Good trip, no problems, that is the way to have a trip like that... Tractor looks real nice, runs like a top and looks good. It does have some leaks that will have to be fixed, but I am very pleased.

Dad asked why I bought a tractor that actually runs?? what is the challenge in that?? he says.....

Cat Repowers? in reply to Shep VA, 03-05-2006 08:52:23
I wonder how easy it would be to put a CAT 3126 in an Oliver, say 1755/1855/1955?

Or perhaps the V-8 Perkins engines that came in the Massey Ferguson 1150/1155?

did you have to cross all the truck scales or did you go right past all of them

The way I understand it is that with a pickup truck and a gooseneck trailer you dont have to cross the scales if you are pulling personal. Least that is the way it is in Virginia.

That is my story and Im sticking to it Officer

Well shoot, you shoulda dropped that off up here, I'm looking for a 1/2 arse loader tractor to run while I take our 165 out of comission for repairs.(needs lots of 'em) Not looking too seriously yet, but I have been searching ebay a little bit. Maybe I can get lucky and get something like you got, and then just take the loader right off the 165.

I think that woulda been a little outta our way to come to your place, but it sure felt like we were further north. Man it is still winter up there. It was 70 degrees when we left Friday, and it was 17 degrees and the wind was blowing when we got to South Bend. WOW what a weather change.

1/2 arse loader????? Insult my tractor and you wont be able to play with the toys.... :-)

I know what you mean, I need to take my 1855 out of commission this summer and fix a bunch of small problems too...

Keep the door shut up there, your letting the cold air down here..... :-)

I aint too picky but you got a good one! I think I would settle for a farmall if its just for the short term even..... Well..... maybe not. I just need something to pick up the big squares with and load the spreader, some other small jobs. I figure it"ll be cheaper to buy a fixer upper and run that instead of paying the shop bill for everything thats wrong with the other one.

Some time I"ll have to come down to VA and help out, I wouldn"t mind taking one of your cummins repowers for a test run, gotta know how our 1755 will run;-)

Yeah, I know what you mean about a fixer upper, specially if you are only gonna use it for a short time.

Come on down to Virginia anytime you like, it is a lot warmer here that is fur sure....

We are starting to rip up some fields now, we had the big 2150 running yesterday turning some dirt. Would be glad to let you run a Cummins Oliver for a while :-) It is also really nice to be able to see a repower tractor before you tackle one yourself.

Later...

Well, up here we just got about 4-5 inches yesterday through this morning, but then it warmed up to about 38. They are calling for lower-mid 40's the rest of the week, some rain here & there. It'll be more than a month before I look at putting the duals on our 1855, I just started hauling some manure out in the feilds, just got sick of pileing it up all winter..... And the 285 on the spreader needs some work too, the engine just wet stacks horribly in the winter, some time I should look at pulling the injectors, or better yet giving it an overhaul as well. It never ends around here!!

Shep, if I remember right, you have a Ford pulling that trailer, right? If so, have you converted it over to a Cummins yet? That is a good looking tractor, if you get bored with it, I"ll be more than glad to watch it for you.

Yeah, we pulled it with a 2000 Ford Dually with the 7.3L powerstroke that has been modified a little (go figure, me modifying something).

A few of the mountains on I 76 in western PA gave the truck a run for its money on the way home, but it never got it pulled down below 55 MPH. There was one mountain there at Summerset PA that I thought we were never going to get to the top of.

Everyone always gives me a hard time about putting Cummins engines in the tractors and driving Ford Powerstrokes on the farm. I love the Cummins engines, I just cant stomach the Dodge trucks. If Ford ever puts a Cummins in a pickup truck I will own one that is for sure.

I saw the Ford-Cummins website and thought about putting a Cummins in a ford, but that looks like a little more of a process than putting one in a tractor. Maybe one day I will try that.....

Thanks for the commments.

I too would love to have a Ford with a Cummins diesel. I will have to agree with you on the amount of work involved in converting a pickup to a cummins. My truck isn"t as new, 1996 F250 (see my picture in the implement photos), but it does the job. What sort of modifications have you done to your 7.3L? I"m thinking of upgrading the torque converter, installing an air intake system, 4" exhaust, and throwing a flatbed on too.

Mine is a 6 speed. It has the heavier clutch that we just put in about a month ago. The engine has a TS 4 position HP chip and a full set of gauges to watch the engine. It has a 4 inch exhaust with a walker truck muffler. I also installed an engine brake and have a cold air intake on it.

It does a real good job of pulling trailers, just dont get off in the fields when it is soft, it doesnt do too good off the highway.

You can modify these trucks as much as your pocketbook will allow....

VA, Virginia? South Bend, Indiana? Main Highway between both is US 33, if you took that route you were 3 1/2 mile from my place

Nope, dont think I was on 33 any. I went out I64 to Lexington KY and up to Cinciniti (sp) and then over to Indy and up to South bend. On the way back we took I 80 east through the top of Ohio and into PA on I 76 to Pittsburg and over to I 81 back to VA.

We tried to stay on the big roads as much as we could.

Sounds like you went several hundred mile out of your way and 33 is 4 lane a lot of the way and is a major truck highway

Oh Sorry bout that...... in reply to Fern(Mi), 03-05-2006 11:55:54
It is an 1850 Perkins Diesel 4x4 with a Great Bend 760 loader. It has just under 5000 hours with 200 on a rebuilt motor and a new clutch.

So far I like it, just has some oil leaks to take care of and it doesnt have a heater in the cab??? I will have to rig one up, is has the blowers and even an AC unit on top, but no heater, that is kinda strange to me.

Good trip though, saw some good country out and back, looks like you mid west guys are just starting to work ground, saw a few tractors turning dirt.

Cab heaters. in reply to Shep VA, 03-05-2006 14:43:46
A lot of people who bought tractors with cabs were planning to use them in the field, and transmission heat was more than enough to keep the cab warm.

Looks like a Comfort Cab. Just finished rebuilding one on an 1850 today. You say it has blowers. If they are in a black box the width of cab a foot deep over windshield against top. Look inside. Should be radiator to front of double squire cage blower. Should be place for one thought it missing. replace it, you"re in business. A heater hose ran up each front cab corner. Boy! I could really use that unit around here. I"m not crazy about taking this apart again for pictures, but can as I have one last upholstery strip to put up against ceiling on one side. If it’d help I can take picture sooner than later. Let me know.
Oh yeah, and, we"re always fixing one more leak.

Yes, that is just what you describe with the blowers, but I dont have the radiator part. I dont think the black box is that deep, maybe 6 or 8 inches deep and it has two slide clips and it hinges down toward the seat. Mine is real easy to let down to see in there.

I think you are correct, I just need to plumb a radiator in there somehow.

If you do have yours down for some other reason shoot me a picture, but dont do it just for the picture.

Thanks.

Okay! Will do. Give me a few days or a couple wks. If you have questions, Cozy Cab will answer them and give you part numbers for what"s left of available parts. Those parts in turn you order through your favorite Oliver Dealer. Figure??

Nice! Any idea what that thing weights? Probably a pretty good load for the trailer. Looks like there is just enough winter left to try it out. Just remember, its not fun getting a 4 x 4 tractor unstuck!

Not sure what it weighs, I was going to weigh the empty truck on the way out and then weigh on the way back, but the scales were backed up where I wanted to weigh and I just didnt do it. I would guess it weighs maybe 15,000 pounds???? with the rear tires full of fluid. It was a good load behind the truck that is for sure. It was also more wind resistance than I anticipated with the cab up there.

Oh I am not planning on getting it stuck, I really dont want to have to try and pull something that big out :-)

Thanks

I'd guess it weighs all of 15,000 and probably more, because our 1855 tips the scales at 13,300, and thats w/ the front weights, loaded tires and the rops/canopy. With the heavy front 4x4 axel on the front plus a loader plus a cab would easily put it over 15. I think I'd say a good 16,000 lbs.
