Oliver 1800 Wide Front Question

I apologise for not knowing the correct names of the parts, but here"s my problem. The steering tie rod is rubbing against the top inside of my tire. On top of the axle housing that leads down to the wheel hub, there is a large nut. When you take that nut off, there is a part that connects the steering tie rod to the top of the axle house. This part is slotted and lifts off exposing a long shaft that runs down (inside) the axle housing and is connected to the axle hub that the wheel bolts on to. Here"s my question. Can thislong shaft be adjusted? In order for the tie rod assemble to not rub on my wheel, I need to turn this slotted shaft slightly (about a 1/4 inch or so. I"ve looked and it seems that where the long shaft enters into the axle hub is a permanent connection. Again sorry for not know the correct part names. Hope someone can make sense of what I"m asking.

The steering arm and the spindle shaft should be splined and you should be able to take the arm off and move it over. YOu will have to adjust the tie rob to allow for that unless someone decided to weld it together ( Have seen this) If the splines are tigh it can be hard to get the arm to come off but it is doable.

Thanks Jeff. I tried to move the splines on the arm over 1 notch but I had no turning ability. I was able to get hold of an oliver (now AGCO) dealer and he told me that the spindle was welded to the wheel hub so no adjustment could be made. He said I could buy off-set wheels, heat the arm and bend it a little, or try to turn the wheels around. Taking the path of least resistance, I turned the wheels around. This gave me the clearance I needed. The only drawback is the valve stems are on the inside now... If I get ambitious someday, I may heat that arm up and bend it slightly.....

Those things get bent alot.You usually have to heat and bend them in and allso up some.I have welded a small stiffener piece of metal alongside so they don't bend again.

I run into this when redoing mine also. If you can take both steering arms off and switch them. I had them on backwrds one time. Is yours the regular wide front or the one that is swept back? If it is swept back I know a guy who has one the took off of his tractor complete. Other than that is the rest of the steering tight? bushings and things? Once I put new bushings in mine I had to readjust the tie rod ALOT to get it inline. Seems the folks I boughtit from just run it out to get the slack out if it.
