Fella that farms the ground behind a friends house that has a 1955 that has been sitting for a few years due to a "bad engine". I haven't looked at it yet, but I was hoping some of you guys could give me a ballpark for a rebuild on one of these. Worst case secenario. It would at least let me know if I just need to walk away from it.
Thanks,
MH

Look at it first. "Bad engine" may mean it is has an air-conditioned crankcase!

Yes, I realize the this will cost some major $$, Question on the crank, seems like I remember that the 310 cank is a problem point and would need to be checked & balanced, am I right or am I thinking of a motor other than the 310?

new top to bottom, turbo to oil pan, 7500, if the block is good, 1500 off of that. Yes, that's kinda steep, but that's what we experienced a couple of years back with labor. balanced and ready too go, good luck!!!

This is a really "ball park" estimate. But here goes. An aftermarket overhaul kit will run about $1200-$1400. That is new pistons, rings, pins, sleeves, main & rod bearings, all gaskets.
Then you will need to remove the head (assuming the head is not cracked or otherwise not usable) you will need to take it to a machine shop to be reworked. In my experience, half of the guides will need to be replaced, all the springs, probably most of the valves. So you can figure just get a valve train kit. These usually run from about $250-$400, depending on the tractor. Most machine shops will run at least $60 per hour. You will have a hard time getting the head back without a 400 or $500 bill for labor.

The above ASSUMES the following: You will do all of your own labor (except machining work). The Crank is good and does not need to be removed and ground. The block lands are good and the block does not need to be removed and line bored. Now we haven't even mentioned the injectors or the pump. Most pumps will run at least $500 or $600 to rebuild, some are over a $1,000.
Starting to get the picture? Any questions?
