I have a 1951 Oliver pulling tractor that has developed a problem over the winter. The tractor ran really well all last season. Even seemed to surprise some people. At the first pull this season it would die about 50-70 ft down the track. It sounded like it was running properly it just could handle even the slightest load. Oh, and by the way this tractor is bone stock except for the electronic ignition and the bigger fuel line. Thanks for any suggestions.

I,d drain and flush the tank and clean the carb, and filter.Sounds like bad fuel or stavation problem.

I've seen that happen on pullers in lighter classes who have very little gas in the tank to make weight, even our own 77 stock and puller tractors. This is a gravity fed system, so the height of fuel in the tank becomes critical when the tractor works under load. Once the fuel in the bowl is burned, there can be insufficient column height of the gas to replenish the bowl quickly enough. You can make a smaller tank if you absolutely have to, or take weight from somewhere else, but you have to have a certain amount of fuel so high above the carburetor.

Trent,
Thanks for the help and I usually pull 4000,4500, and 5000. Occassionally the scales will let me in the 3500 class. All these classes I pull are in Div 2. I always pull in first gear and open her up as that keeps me just within the speed limit. As for the tire size I will have to get back to you on that one. I know they are pretty small and narrow, and I have thought about going to bigger rubber but it was doing so good last season I didn't wanna change anything.

HEy good deal. I run 12.4 about 20% too and was thinking about going to 13.6 But i was doing pretty well also. How do you place when you pull in first gear. I normally pull in second gear about 3/4 throttle to stay under speed limit. I was thinking about trying first but didn't know what cause it would give me. thanks have a good one Trent

Trent,
I haven't ever tried pulling in second. The tractor is probably too wore out. I have always finished in the top three and had some pretty good pulls even with a heavy sled. Looking to rebuild it sometime soon, but I am going through a police academy and working full-time so I barely even have time to go to pulls. It will get done one of these days though. I also have a 48 JD A we pull with. It unlike the Oliver has had a lot of work done to it. I haven't been able to choke it down yet. Well good luck in your pulling and have fun.

MAke sure your timiing is a little more advanced than stock. Check that your carb is putting out enough fuel. Sounds like more of a fuel problem. NOt rich enough or over the winter gas turned a little bad and pluged a passage or two. best luck thanks. what tires do you pull with? What weight class and what gear do you pull in. have a good one. Trent
