I'm working on a '54 Super 88 Diesel. I removed the old damaged input shaft and have a good used one to replace the old one. I have two questions - how do I remove the front oil seal that is on the shaft (no belt pulley so it has the front bearing retainer housing piece) and second - my good used shaft is same diameter and size except it is like 1/4 inch longer that the old one. Will that interfere with the hyd. pump or will it be ok?

45 years ago when it was a popular shop job to add a hydraulic unit we sawed a lot of the long shafts which were used when the tractor had a mechanical lift while the shaft was still in the transmission so I am sure they were a little longer also compared to the factory short shaft. This would work on a gas model but the diesels idled too fast to do this. Look at the back of it, that might explain the difference. J.

Jim,

Right click on Picture and it will ask you to save this Picture. Left click on save and this will save the picture in your picture fold on your computer. You can Increase the size of the photo to see the details a little big and better.
Hope this helps???? Mike

Jim,

Not sure if this picture will be good enough to see to help?
At the top right hand side shows # 34 & 35 are bearing retainers. No.35 has a Felt seal you may want change that? No.36 is the oil seal. You will have to remove the bearing retainer to do this the are three bolts that holds this retainer on the front of trans. Maybe already done this?

The shaft "OVAL" I"m not sure on the extra 1/4" would hurt anything. I know this will not hit the Hydraulic Pump. Maybe someone will help on this a little more than what I can.
Mike
