Found a nice 548. It is weathered but solid. Good moldboards, etc. Five bottom. One plow can be removed. Asking $1500, but said he'd consider an offer.

1. For transportation purposes, how much does this thing way?

2. Is this plow the same as a later model White?

3. What do they bring in your area?

4. How do they do in a trashy filed? We had gum saplings but bushogged over them twice.

Thanks again guys. Sure is nice to be able to post a few questions like this and pick some brains.

The first 548 plows were green & were available with a 14/16" backbone and also with a 16/18" backbone. The early White [red] plows were available with the same set up. However, the later 548 plows were available as 16/18" backbone only. As a side note, most of the plows sold in central Michigan had 16" moldboards but the backbones were set for 18" cut. You would have no problem with a plow set this way as long as you used the White 16" regular share, not the short share. If you bought your plow new with the optional disk jointers instead of the straight coulters and coverboards, you would find that this plow would pull easier at 18" than the 16" set backbone with coverboards. We could make a lot of the "competitions" tractors look real good with a White plow behind them.

I"ve got a 546 4 bottom that I think is part of the series, and I hauled it on a skid steer trailer behind my 1/2 ton pick up with no problems. I"d have to guess it was right around 2-2 1/2 ton, so a 5 bottom would be another 500 or so.

I got our 546 for about 300 2 years back, but it needed everything exept the moldboards. If it were a White 508 whichj is about the same plow, It would be right around 1000 for the same condition around here.

They do good in trashy feilds, atleast no problems that I"m aware of. Depending on the size of the roots, and if it"s Spring auto reset or just spring trip like ours is, you may want to loosen them up some or you may be replacing a bunch of shares. Normally it has to be a good size root to snap them off, but I have seen them break for no reason also.

I"d offer 1000, if that much. If he doesn"t take and has it for a while he"ll reconsider. $1500 just seems high for a rusty but solid plow, espescially since no-till and chisel plows are all the rage now-a-days.

In '74, the 548's were red, with White-Oliver
decals. The bottom shares were 18", SAR, strong
Semi-mount plows worked well in trash clearance.
Price really depends on location. Seems every year on these farm sites, you read of March/April
giant consignment auctions, w/moldbord plows at
scrap iron price. Hard to believe Raydex/Speedex
would be included. I saw a set of 6-20" non-SAR,
no colters, for $200 in Indiana, couple years ago.
If hauling is far, price appears high.
