I bought a 69 550 with a melted wiring system, changed over to alternater. Switched to neg. ground but gauges peg out and it only runs for a few seconds. Any ideas

First off the gauges tell you some thing. Sounds like you have it wired wrong. Gauges should do what there doing if wired right. My self I would start out with just enough wireing to get it to run and then go from there. To do that all you need is the hot wire to the coil and a way to turn the engine over. I have tested/started a good number of engines that way. But I also know how to make my own wireing systems on tractors.

have gauges fig.out, gas reostate was tarred up and alt does not work so i put different one on and it works. Theres plenty of gas so im wondering what happens when theres a bad coil?

Coils don't go bad all that easy, unless your running a 6 volt coil on 12 volts and then they get real hot before they go bad. I'd check/replace the poits and condenser first then maybe the coil.

First of all how do you have it wired? Myself I would like to know why you converted to an alternator. You should have no problems with that system using the generator> Does it die because of no spark or no fuel? Questions?
