I was unaware, but found out the hard way tonight, that the styled 70's used different axles, housings, and bull gears on certain years. it seems the earlier ones had bull gears that tightened down with bolts, whereas the later ones used a lock ring. am i correct in this or did i run into something weird? any idea on what years used the lock ring? My 1947 had the lock ring, but when i went to replace them with a set from a 1940, it was the bolt type. i need to find a set that uses the lock ring, and if anyone can tell me what year they changed it, it would be of much help. thanks in advance.

The lock ring and the 2 1/2 inch axles started at serial number 238269 and continued to the end of production on the row crops.

The bolt type of bull gears with the 2 1/4 axles were on all 70 row crops up to 238268. The change was made in mid 1941.

The 70 series had more changes in it's production life than any other oliver tractor.
Any one working on one should have their own parts book. Even with your own book things can be confusing.
