I have a White 2-70 diesel with the two 6V batteries in series. Would it work OK to replace them with one good quality 12V battery on the left hand side? What would be the best battery to use that would fit in the White/Oliver battery box?
Thanks.

My 1800 c has 1 12 volt in front of the steering wheel. The prev. owner set the wheels in for 30 inch rows and had a loader on it. He had to remove the lower battery box so the loader frame would clear. I would not do it myself, would convert it to two 12 volts like all my other diesels.

What is your reasoning for going with one battery? I decided on staying with two 6 volts. Interstate brand 4XHD models with 950 CCA each. They were the biggest group size to fit in the boxes. I also used 1/0 cable with premium marine type connections. This was on a 1650 diesel that was hard to start and made a big difference.

I will agree that when everything is new and in good shape the two 6V batteries will will give better performance. My understanding is that you can crank for a longer period of time with 2 batteries and they tolerate using the intake pre-heater better.
I guess I just don't like having to replace 2 batteries when one or the other them goes bad, so this was going to be an experiment to see how the single battery goes. I don't do a lot of cold weather starting and if necessary I can charge the batteries to warm them up and use the block coolant heater.

It should work fine to replace with one 12 volt. I would use an Interstate with about 800 CCA. Interstate makes very good batteries.

Thanks Adam for the advice.

Does anyone have an idea what Group# battery would be the largest that would fit in the box? I believe the 6-volts are a size 5D.

I use a 30H and there is still a little room left.

The 29H is alright (30H was discontinued and replaced with the 29H), but the Interstate 31P-PHD is the way to go. The size is EXACTLY the same as the 29H, but the posts are centered on the 31P instead of being off to one side. The cold crank on the 31P is around 950 amps (I think the 29H is only 675 CCA). If a diesel tractor calls for a 29H, I use the 31P-PHD instead. I think it is around $100, and it has a 18 month free replacement warrrany. And if you really want some cranking power, hook 2 31P batteries in parallel.

AB in my 1650 I used a 31-s with 1000 cca it's what I had, they are the same size as 4-D or5-D. With the stud type the ends are a whole lot less money, and do as good of a job. Trucks left 6 volt several years ago, Ihave supple of 2/0 cable but current flows on out side of wire, more wires morecurrent can flow. I have other greens with 1 31-s with 466 engine. Boco
