I went to start my 1963 550 yesterday morning, and it started to crank over (very briefly), and then it stopped. Now when I turn the key to the start position, all that happens is I hear an electrical crackling from the solenoid. The battery is fine, so I am assuming that it is the solenoid. Are there other checks that I can do to verify this? Is the solenoid difficult to replace?

Thanks

MT

There is a quick-fix to this problem. It involves no more than un-hooking the battery cable from the solenoid, and loosen the second nut enough to push the post inside the solenoid enough to turn it a half turn. Be sure the square shoulders on the post come back into the hole, and retighten. Good as new, and will last a long time.

Check and clean the connections , sounds like you have something loose or corroded. How long has it been sitting?

I usually start it up and let it run for a while at least once per week. It gets used more than that if it snows. Is it difficult to take the solenoid off?

Thanks.

It's not difficult, make sure you unhook the battery cables. it's just a matter of unhooking the cables at the solenoid and unbolting the solenoid, just be careful when you take the first nut off that it isn't turning the threaded part. there is a second nut behind the cables, make sure that nut is snug , it holds the threaded part in place and holds it from turning, other than that you should have no problem. question, does this tractor still have the six volt system on it and is it diesel or gas ?

Sorry, I should have mentioned that at the beginning. The tractor is gas, and still has the original ignition system (except for points/coil/plugs/etc.).
