I bought a1850 Diesel back in Oct 05. About every 3rd week I had to rechare the battery. This week I started to rewire the electrical system starting from the top and working down. By the end of the day I noticed that my schematic called for 3 wires from the altenator and I have only 1. Also near the alternator was a orange wire not connected and I noticed that there is no voltage regulator. Can someone tell where it should be located? And if I should replace the Alt w/ an original, or find a regulator to work w/ the 1 wire Alt? All help is appreciated!
Bernie

I have an original charging system setup for an 1850 complete w/alternator and external regulator if you are interested. Good working order.

I have an 1850 with a single wire alternator set up. It works great. It takes about 1200 RPM to turn on. I have extra lights for night feeding and it supports them well. I run my tractor every day so I haven"t noticed a drain. Is this a common problem with a one wire alternator? PK

I get no positive swing from the ammeter regardless of rpm. Also, the ammeter swings to negative side when I put on any lights, indicating a discharge. I run mine 2-3 days a week put try and start it daily.

I can tell you any one-wire alternator is going to use a few milli-amps, just sitting. Kind of like a digital clock, or leaving a two way radio on all the time. If you go 3 weeks at a time w/o running you probably best convert back to the original energized field set up. I think I could get you a Napa number for the ext regulator for about $10-12 for their less expensive line.

I run the Ollie about 2-3 times per week if nothing else just to keep it running during the cold weather. She never is hard to start as long as I preheat.

Do you have the Napa Number for the less expensive regulator?

Thanks,

BL

The way I understand it is that the newer 1-wire alternators don't need an external regulator as they have an internal one. Our 1855 is a later model with all the factory updates, it also has an alternator that doesn't require a regulator. Our 1755 which is an earlier model does require one. you may want to get the numbers off the alternator and get them looked up at an auto parts store and see what the specs are or how to wire it.

the only # found on the ALT were 8-1 in raised numbers located on the back bottom. The connector on the ALT reads BAT, yet the dark green wire connected to it goes from the ALT to the ignition side of the AMP Gauge

First question for me: Why did you start to rewire it? Did you look for a slow drain like a leaking diode in the alternator/ Now, personaaly I would not use the single wire set up. If you are going original those old Delco's were simple and trouble free. What model alternator do you have now? Maybe you should uconvert it back to 3 wire. No doubt it has the internal regulator/ I don't know if you do but talk to me I am sure we both have more questions. J.

When I bought Ollie, it had 2 front lights, 1 rear, no outer ft. lights, and no rear red light. Additionally, the temp, fuel gauges and the panel lights didn't work. I bought the lights to bring it back stock and purchased a new rotary switch since the old one wasn't working and the lights had been rewired to a toggle switch on the dash where the rotary belonged. To add insult to injury, someone had oversprayed green paint on the wires making me scrape paint to indentify the true wire color and the wires were located on the wrong terminals of the damaged rotary switch. This past weekend we had good, warm weather that allowed me to renovate the brakes and start on the rewiring of the lights and switch. I just went outside to check for # on the Alt. The only one I found was on the back bottom in Raised numbers 8-1 thats it. Also, the 1 connection is for the bat. but the schematic shows the dark green wire going to the ignition side of the amp gauge. I can get a rebuit ALt for $43 at NAPA, but the V regulator is $49, still its cheaper than I expected for the ALT alone. Could you tell where the Voltage Regulator should be mounted if I go that route? Could you shoot a picture to email me with the location? Thanks for all the info,,,BTW thanks for the quick response too!

Bernie
