Going to an auction tomorrow and an Oliver 83 2 row corn picker is listed. Where these machines any good in their day. I figure it may have been seeing how it is still around. Any thoughts? Don't need it, just going to the auction for the fun of it.

You are right Brad I must be too St-St-Stupid to know how to run a picker. Funny thing my dad had a #3 and it was the same way. How do you suppose I could make a New Idea work if I am so dumb?? A person would think an Oliver picker is a good unit if they never ran anything else. An old yellow (not bronze) colored MM is better than the 83. Sorry, gotta get back to my special- ed class!

Sorry BradK. I should of directed the question to Matt-In. The 73 looked like a good machine. Today I looked at a 77-D with a4 picker, but it has sat outside for ouer 20 years. Boco

Jim@Concordfarms - 77 is't at Beehunter. That is where I saw the 73-pulltype two row wide. There was a mower conditioner there to, all gone but a Fox silage blower. I go that way to Indy from So. Il. Boco

Boco, Is that 77 with the #4 around Beehunter? If it is, I'd appreciate directions. I'd like to go look at it just for the memories. Dad had one, but sold it for 50.00 quite a few years ago. Real shame, it had never spent a night outside. Thanks. Jim.

buy a 324 New Idea and have something! The 83 grinds up corn about as bad as an IH 2pr, or buy the Oliver picker and a bunch of stock cows! Limit the time they are in the field for awhile or they will over eat and get sick if they are not used to corn!! I like Oliver tractors but wouldn't own one of their pickers. One simple word JUNK!!

I did a search on "Yesterdays" and I found your write in. I'm currently looking for a 2 row picker and had a guy E-mail back that he has a New Idea 324. I know nothing about them as I'm just getting started to do a little farming, more for hobby at this time. I'm growing food for deer plots and Phesant feed. I would appreciate anything that you can tell me about the NI 324, what to look for? Thanks for anything you can pass on.

famous amos, Any picker will "grind" as you put it or more accurately shell corn under certain conditions. The most popular cause is snapping-roll spacing which is adjustable (although some people don't know this)The other is too dry of corn caused from picking too late.We have a 324 NI also and it's a fantastic picker when ADJUSTED correctly! To say the Oliver 83 is junk leads me to believe you know nothing about pickers,or more so,nothing about the 83 picker.~brad

I have to agree with Brad. You need to pay attention to how wide you have the snapping rolls & how fast you travel. I had a #5 & it picked very clean corn.

Matt~
I have an 83NR picker and I think they are a very well designed & built machine. I haven't had any trouble with mine, but in case I do I have a parts picker as well. The guy I bought the parts picker from also threw in a bunch of NOS parts. Fairly modern pickers also.Built from '67 - '76.~brad

I have a 83 wide row with a 12 roll bed. It has been a good picker. Don't use it much any more, as I have a 3 row NI Uni-picker that I can jump on and use for opening up the field.Too bad I don't have an Oliver tractor to pull it with. Maybe someday I will find a nice late model 770, have always like the looks of those.
