We rebuilt our 1850 gas, complete overhaul kit with new crank and rebuilt head. We also put electronic ignition in it and new plugs. It starts and runs good but it has a flutter to it like the carb isn"t right. We tryed adjusting it but it doesn"t seem to help. It"s a cast carb but we have an aluminum carb for it also. The timing is right and the tractor seems to run better when it warms up. After it is warmed up there is a line of frost about an inch above the carb and about 2 inches tall toward top of manifold. The air temp is about 25 degrees and the fluttering was a problem before the overhaul. Any help would be great! Thanks. Cliff

I don't know about the 1850 but when the 1600 gas would ice up they would not run the best. Have you put a vacuum gauge on it and checked your readings? Have you had it on a dynometer? How does it run with the aluminum carburetor?

The carb was not overhauled with a kit and we didn't try the other carb. This is my dads tractor who passed away 2 years ago, so I don't know if the other carb has issues. The advance is controlled by vacuum and I have not hooked up a gauge. What should it read at certain RPM? The flutter appears more at lower RPM's and the motor seems to be pulling down at higher RPM's. We do not have a dyno available. The timing was set by ear not a timing gun. Thanks!

Was the carb overhauled with a kit? At what rpms does the flutter appear and how does it change with rpms (get better or worse)? Do the rpms fluctuate or is this fluctuation more of a misfire or weaker ignition? I am not so familiar with the electronic ignition modules, so can you tell me how spark advance is addressed with these modules? And prior to the installation of the module, did this tractor have vacuum advance or mechanical advance? Many possibilties and without actually hearing it, it could be tough to pinpoint the exact problem on the first attempt over the internet, but you're bound to get plenty of advice and help from people more qualified than I, so how about some more information on the nature of this flutter and discuss the questions above as a starting point.
