Does anyone know what the specs are for float height and float drop on a 1650. Carb is Marvel Schebler TSX-807

Adam,

Here is some other things for you to consider. You need to basically narrow it down to either a fuel or ignition problem after you have checked out the big things like compression, manifold gasket leaks, etc. (follow what RAB told you).

1) If the carburetor is getting plenty of fuel and the float is OK, then you could likely have a bad main jet in your carb. If you screw the jet all the way in and it doesn't kill the engine, then the main jet is bad. Unfortunately, a carb kit will do you no good as I have never seen a carb kit that gives you more than a few gaskets and a new needle valve for the float. You will have to buy a rebuilt carb ($200 or $300).

2) If points and condensor are giving you problems, then you might consider putting in solid state ignition. There is a company in California called Pertronix that makes kits for most tractors. They are really easy to install. I think it was around $100 last time I bought one a couple of years ago.

I am not saying these are your problems, but do consider them. I am not just talking off the cuff, but speaking from practical experience on both these items.

Thanks for the reply, this tractor has a pertronix ignition, not points anymore. Also, the main jet you are talking about, is that the screw next to the idle mixture screw on the top of the carb or something else inside. Thanks for the help.

Adam,

With the carb inverted and gasket in place, the float should be 1/4 inch above the gasket. With no gasket, set the float 9/32 inch above the machined surface of the carb half.

When adjusting (bending) the float arms, carefully use needle nose pliers and remember not to exert pressure on the needle and seat. Also, when reassembling, check to make sure that the float moves freely and does not interfere with the sides of the bowl at any point.

With regard to engine temp, you want to see it in the "normal" range when working the tractor. If it is not getting there, check the thermostat. If it tests OK and you are operating in cold weather, you may have to partially block off the radiator to get the temp up. In the winter months, I noticed that my 1650G will make a lot of condensation in the crankcase if I do not run it hot enough. (I stuff rags in the square holes of the cast grille.)

As Rab stated, you may have other factors at play here, especially if it has been monkeyed with. However, once you get it straightened out, I think you will come to appreciate this great tractor.

Don"t give up - you will persevere!

Good luck,
Scott

I watch with interest, your tune up.
Just a hint, which may or may not be appreciated.
First find out what is causing the problem.
Previously you changed all the electrical components which may cause a misfire or complete malfunction, but not the contact points which are generally the only component subject to normal operational wear, tear and failure (contact surfaces dirty or pitted, heel operating cam worn, weak or broken return spring, poor connections). You did not mention why, and on what basis, you found them in need of replacement.
You did not say, or even suggest, that the ignition system was faulty.
Unless you diagnose a few symptoms you may well go round and round in circles getting nowhere, which I think is the case at present.
Have you checked other tune up requirements? Valve clearances, timing advance, manifold leaks, plug grade suitability, operating temperature, fuel combustion, spark quality, governor operation, fuel supply and cleanliness, carburettor idling and power adjustment, air cleaner operation silencer back-pressure.
Do you have appropriate spark plug leads/suppressors for the type of ignition you have fitted?
Just a few things that might need checking/ adjusting before you delve into things like float height which does not change in the normal tune-up period.
Like I say, start with some form of diagnosis.
Maybe even a compression test might be appropriate.
RAB

I was looking for the float height and drop because I am going to take the carb apart and clean it and just want to make sure everything is set right, like I said, the previous owner had a lot of things messed up. And yes, I have changed a few things, replaced the air filter (it was all plugged up) getting plenty of fuel, in fact too much, using 9 gallons per hour at full load. Replaced ignition components to freshen them up, wires and cap were looking pretty worn out. I know it may seem like I am doing a lot of things unnecessarily but I am trying to fix prior mistakes by previous owner and figure things out for myself. My main problem is and continues to be fouling spark plugs and high gas consumption. When I put new plugs in she runs great, until a plug fouls out. Currently I am using Autolite 65's gapped at .035 with the pertronix ignition. Also you mentioned engine temp. I have noticed the temp does not rise much. Last fall when working tractor hard temp rose to normal level, but now with light loads temp does not rise much. Any suggestions on any of this would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, this tractor has electronic ignition so no points to replace. I am replacing all this stuff because the former owner messed a lot of things up. Just trying to get things right again, and solve my problems.
