If nobody has tinkered with your 88 as change rear ends or ring & pinons your C88C transmission has slower than normal 1st & 3rd gears. The serial number should be below 126 483. Now there are some 88 tractors that have slower gewars than that but they will be after that serial number, Questions? I am kind of dumb and slow. I don't understand what you mean by other designations?

At the serial number I gave you changers were made. More model 88 tractors were built after that serial number so some of the other ones are more common. Just to give you something to think about, this was good Super 88 country and over 90% were diesels. I found the serial number records for most of the Super 88 tractors we serviced and I noticed all the gas models had the slow speed rear end while all the diesel tractors had the regular speed ring and pinon. I have no idea why and this may have varied from area to area. Question?

The ring and pinon combination does affect all the speeds, but since first and third are the same gear depending on what neutral you are in if they have a different number of teeth than on other tractors it will affect the speed of those two gears. Probably affect reverse also but I did not look. J
