Can anyone tell me if they have ever had problems with the 1650 distributors? My mothers tractor will start right up and run but only with the choke way out. Now I know your gonna think fuel prob. but when it runs with the choke out , it smokes black.so i think it is getting plenty of fuel. It has a holley distributor and i think i was told they were known fo rgoing bad. I have never hooked a dwell meter to it. I used to race 6 cylinder chevies in dirt track racing and checy had a bad bushing problem. They said you had to buy a new dist. but i used to set them up in the lathe and rebuild myself. Now i havent had any time to dig in too deep because i am afraid about the time i tear it down it will snow and we will need the tractor. I did notice it had a vacumm advance on it and thought this was kinda strange for a farm tractor. any thoughts? thanks

The vacuum advance is factory on the 1650, no mistaking that- both of ours have been replaced, but in your case, I would be checking fuel line restriction and more likely, your carb as others have stated. Very easy carb to go thru- did mine faster then the lawn mowers I work on everyday. Good luck!

Before I would start taking the distributor apart I would take the carb off and clean it real good and check your air breather. If the tractor has been sitting alot it might be that dirt dobbers have built enough nests in the air intake to clog it up ( personal experience...) or could be trash in the carb not letting enough fuel in without the choke.

Both are pretty simple to check.

I agree, sounds like a dirty carb. Had this happen to one of my IH's, had to soak the carb in cleaner over night to get the build up out.
