Was power steering rare, not uncommon, or common on a older (50's or 60's) 550?

Coincidentally, I was asking my local Agco-Oliver dealer that very question today. I asked the son of the original owner of the dealership, the son has a 550 of his own.

Of the nearly 50 550�s he has seen or worked on over the years, less than 10 had P.S. When one was traded in with PS, he bought it.

His indication was that it is the proverbial �needle in a haystack�.

I have a 550 Diesel and it has power steering. I found a copy of the owners manual and it leads me to believe that all of the 550's made at the time the book was printed also had power steering. The power steering pump on my 550 is attached to the rear of the generator and is driven by the generator shaft. P.S. I don't know the year model of my 550 because the serial number plate is lost.

That type of power steering pump/generator combo was used on GM cars in the mid-50's.

Is your power steering integral in the steering box, or is it more like a hydraulic cylinders pushing to tie-rods and kingpins?

Interestingly, I spoke to a gentleman today (in Wisc.) who adapted cylinders from a combine to make hydraulic power steering for his S-55. He used one of the Chevy pump/generator combos for it.

I am REAL interested in finding out more about how your friend added PS to his S 55. A 550 that I looked at with PS has the cylinders on each side like you described, so I was wondering if it was possible to adapt this type of setup to a tractor that doesn't have PS. Could you get more details and maybe some pictures? Thanks, Danny

Guys, The guy i live with has a super55 with power steering (ID plate is missing) . It has the integrated pump &genorator. (some of the 550's have a seperate pump) the cylenders and pump are pretty straight forward the problem as i see it is the control on the steering shaft. I could take pictures if anyone is interested. Would like a workable solution my self.
