I picked-up an ARPO 3pt backhoe for my 550 and am working on adding hydraulics run off of the crankshaft to power it. I've been through the archives and got a lot of tips, but still have some items to work out before I start. Does anyone have or know of a write-up on this type of project? If not, this is what I have to work with: Gas '73 550, no loader, no other hyd attachmnets; Backhoe w/OC valve, no oil resv. on it, needs 6-8 GPM min @ 2250 psi, 5 doulble acting cylinders including stabs, 2 single acting for swing, all 1/4" lines after the valve. Mounting the pump and coupler isn't a problem, it's the hydraulic requirements and plumbing.
Questions: Where's the best place to put a 8-10 Gal resv. on the tractor if one gal of resv for each GPM of pump is a good rule of thumb?
Is a 10-15 GPM spec gear pump best (Char-Lynn's are often on eBay) to get the right power/flow to the hoe?
Do I need a valve/bypass on the tractor so the pump can circulate oil all the time to cool itself? Should a power-beyond be set-up thru this valve and to rear disconnects?
You can see I still need some pretty basic info before I can even think of starting. Any Help out there? Please reply or email any advise you have.
Thanks, Clay

Good Morning JS and Everyone, I can't reply to emails sent from the forum for some reason so am trying to reply here. Please resend your mails direct to me, and we'll see if the forum relay is part of the problem. Thanks

I do plan to make a relief valve and filter a part of the system. I want to have them on the tractor instead of the hoe so they'll be there when the hoe isn't connected. I'd like to run the engine around 1500 - 1800 RPM if I can get the right pump. I know the pump has to run CCW or bi-dir, but other than that, I'm going by type and size for a NIB on eBay.

Do you have any ideas so the tank blends in so it looks like it belongs on the tractor, versus a junkyard jury-rig with it just strapped on someplace? I haven't looked into increasing the tractor's resv size somehow, but maybe that's possible.

Thanks for your help. I read all the archives on this type project back to '00 and noticed your name with good questions, info, and advice a lot. I'm on the road with my work often (until the 23rd this trip), but hope to get started between the holidays. I do have the Oliver CD and hoe book with me.

As far as a tank northern has them, I use one of there 4 or 5 gallion tanks for my front end loader and it has an 8 gpm pump. Also with a back hoe you will need/want weight up front, my self I prefer a loader that way the tractor will do more then just dig deep holes. As far as pumps northern also has them. And yes you need a valve set up to keep the oil flowing in a circle, or at least thats how its set up on my backhoe.
