On a 1953 Oliver 88 the Hydraulics have one
lever sticking out each side . Each side has two
pipes with a special block to hook the hydraulic
hoses to. Here's the question ARE THESE PIPE THREAD
OR DO THEY USE AN O-RING FITTING? The hoses I took
out, were pipe thread, but the female threads in
the fitting look like straight.threads like on a J.D. O-ring fitting. I know this hyd. system is not the one that came on this tractor origionally. It is Oliver but not the origional electric system.

The threads are pipe thread. The unit is the correct hydraulic for a '53. Not all units were hydroelectric. Some units were sold as hydraulic units and you need to use the levers on the side to activate the cylinders. The electric systems in the early years had a lot of connections. Ask any dealer who serviced the first ones. Later the wiring was much better, but the system did not catch on. Today there are many hydraulic systems controlled with transistor controls.

From what I understand the hyd system could be either way when new. As far as the treads I don't know but all of mine have pipe tread hoses hooked to them and work just fine, but that may or may not be correct.
