HEllo WHat gear do you guys that run stock classes with 66 77 or 88's run. The normall speed limit in the classes is around 3-3.5. ONe old time puller said run second at a lower rpm to stay under speed limit. then go full throttle at the end when your tires are slipping alittle. thanks happy holidays

I had always pulled in 2nd with my 77 if the rules allowed. Run out of power for the 1st time this summer in 4500 lb distance class. Went to 1st for 5000 lb class and run out of power again. Let's say that a lot of the competition was not stock. In the percentage pulls I weigh around 38-3900 and usually spin out.

Hey guys thanks for the info. I normally pulled in 2nd gear on dry tracks I couldn't keep the front down even with weight and on med. tracks I noramlly do great. on wet tracks of course depending on the line that I take. I noramally do good. I ran second all year and place top five in7 pulls. The last pull because of the pulling hitch I made I was in the alterated stock class and pulled in second, I had the weight set perfect and had the front off just a hair andhad great traction and ran out of power. I was wondering would first do me any better. Next year I'm going to put my stock hitch back on for that pull so I can run in the true stock class. thanks for the help guys happy holidays

I'm new to pulling and have only done it once. I run a S88 and pulled my first and only pull in first and plan to run it in second if I pull again. I didn't run out of power but did run out of traction and I was 100lbs lite also in a 5500lbs class. Came in fourth out of 17 tractors so I didn't feel to bad. Also have been told if you have a wide front end your a little better off in a pull also becuase its heavyer then a trike front.

My 88 has the higher gears and I usually stay in 1st as mine tends to choke down in second even down to 5000# Jak"s on the other hand is a Super and does really well in 2nd, also if I go ot 2nd I am faster than 3-3.4 and can"t keep the RPM up to use it.

Either way will work as we pull against each other alot and usually run really close together in the standings. Not sure which of us is ahead on winning but I think it is pretty close.

Try 2nd a few times and if it doesn"t work go back ot 1st and work on weight placement and hitch and things.

What the old timer told you is what I do myself on the S88 unless I am above 6000lbs then I have to go back to 1st.My 88 has the low rear gearing ratio which makes 2nd a better choice yours may be different.Have someone check your serial numbers to see what you have.Jack(TN)

I found out that the serial numbers lie sometimes. Mine has the codes for the low gears but I don't see it according to the speeds I run in 1st and 2nd. Surely someone wouldn't have swapped reas ends on a tractor.... LOL!!!!! Ya got that old ragged Super tuned up and shining yet??? I think I am going ot bring that S77 over to the shop and fix the mechanical stuff.

Might need to get you to help me with the paint sometime but it will be a while.
