I might be buying a 1000 rpm 3pt snow blower and was wondering how the shaft is changed in these Olivers. How exactly do you change it? I am used to Deere/IH"s PTO"s, but know nothing about Oliver"s..... ....Also, should it be done on a bank like a Deere so I don"t have a "Oil SPILL" to clean up(Smile).

On the 1500 and 1600 series tractors, there is no shifting involved. Simply remove snapring, change shafts, and install snapring. To know if you have a dual speed, remove the shaft and look in to see if you have two sets of splines, one ahead of the other. Some of the single speed units are not sealed up, so removing the shaft is like removing the drain plug for the rearend.

If the Oliver in question does have the dual-speed PTO option, then it's extremely easy. It's just a matter of removing(in most cases)4 bolts at PTO stub, removing jam nut & bolt and use same bolt to shift gears while turning shaft.Which model are you thinking?...Oh and there's no oil spillage when changing.~brad

Opps, forgot to mention it is my 1850..... ..Supposed to have the dual shaft setup I was told. Didn't really care as I really only ever need the 540, but this snowblower is cheap because of the 1000 shaft, so I got to wonder how in the world do you change them.

All you have to take out is the snap ring around the PTO shaft bearing and put the other shaft and bearing in.

The shifter will be in the lower right. I normally put a bolt in the end of the threaded shifter so I can change it easier.

So in other words, park it with the front end pointed down a small incline like a JD? Unless I want my boots waterproofed(Smile). Man, a guy can really get spoiled with IH's dual shaft setup.

Wellll, it is not "that" bad. The PTO unit has a seal in back of the shaft that is 'supposed" to keep the oil from getting in with the PTO shaft. But it always leaks, even after putting new ones in. Soooo when you pull the shaft out most of the time you get about a pint of gear oil coming out with the shaft. Then after you install the shaft again it slowly leaks into the shaft cavity again until there is another pint of gear oil waiting for its next victum.

As long as you are aware that it is going to happen it is not normally a big deal, but it can waterproof your shoes for you if you are not ready :-) Yes I like the Moline or IH set up with both shafts better, but Oliver never did that, so we deal with switching them....

Welllll it is not "quite" as easy as brad says, but it isnt too hard. I change my 1850 shaft all the time.

The one thing you have to remember is that the PTO shaft has to be out of the tractor and the safety button must come out in the shaft hole like it is supposed to BEFORE you shift the gear. If not you will get it caught in between the gears and then you have to fiddle with it for an hour to get it back in gear.

With the 1850 the change is not bad. Take the snap ring off the PTO shaft, Pull the shaft out, Clean up all the gear oil that spilled on your shoe, check that the safety button has moved back. Shift the PTO on the lower right of the unit, and put the 1000 shaft in and replace the snap ring.

Nothing to it.

How do you shift the pto after you put the 1000 shaft in. Do you mean put the pto into gear or what. Never changed mine on my 1650 but would like to know how.
