I'm helping a neighbor rebuild a Super 77. After realizing the head is shot, I'm considering looking for a used motor. Any suggestions on where to look?

First question: You said the head was shot. Please explain> If it is because it has cracks in it I would worry if it WAS NOT Cracked. Second question How well do you understand Lanova combustion chambers?

Mr. Schwiebert.....I would be interested in a lesson. Tonight I tore the head off of a 1650 diesel(lanova), and it was cracked between valves and along the axis of the injectors in some cylinders. None of the cracks are big nor look like they would extend into a water jacket. I'm assuming they are normal from your comments? What percentage of lanova engines have you worked on would you say are cracked?

You are in a little different ball game with the 1650 head. I don't know why you took the head off, but on the later, larger engines that have the cracks between the valves they can leak. The ones parallel with the injector bores will not. I have a couple of friends of mine who used to work on Buda truck engines. Older Buda engines had the words Buda-Lanova on the engine. It was always my understanding the Lanova design was first used by Buda. Anyhow they used joke and say if a dime did not fall in the crack, not to worry. Questions? Send me an e-mail We had a couple hundred of Oliver diesels around. Probably 99% were cracked. I also know that on some of the first 88 diesels back in the 50's when the heads were removed and cracks were found nobody was sure how far the crack would extend and the heads were replaced by Oliver. Do you have a casting number (Oliver and Waukesha) for your head?

My neighbor took the head to have it rebuilt. When he went to pick it up they had everything in a box and said it was not worth it because of the cracks. (I"m hopeful you can redirect our thinking!) I know nothing about Lanova combustion chambers; I"m all ears.

Thanks a bunch!

Dustin

I have a complete Super 77 Diesel that I may part out. If you're close to Southern Indiana and are interested let me know.

We're near Austin, TX. Does the engine run? What kind of condition? It's unlikely we'll make a deal, but I'd refer to your post if its an avenue we want to explore.
