Moved the big Mo out of the shop for a little while today and got some pictures of it. Still missing the radiator and starter motor, both are being worked on this week, but as soon as they are back I am going to try and start her.

I have the turbo all installed the electrical still needs a few things, and I have to finish the paint job on the hood and put the decals on, but I think she will be ready for spring....

I also installed a kinda home made muffler in that big chrome pipe. I have a 3 1/2 inch pipe inside that thing with a bunch of holes in it to help knock down the noise. I am anxious to see if that works or not.

Just thought you guys would like an update. More to come, she is almost done.....

Looks really nice, the turbo a lone will lessen the noise you should not need any kind of muffler.I would like to see a picture of your turbo arangement and the manafolds on the motor.Larry

Here is an idea of what the charger set up looks like. I welded a plate on to the exhaust manifold for the charger and elbow, and cut a hole in the intake manifold and welded the end of it shut. The only thing I dont like is that the oil system is running at an angle because of the elbow I put on top of it and the way the oil return was routed. I will see how it does when I get it started, I may change that. I have some more pictures if you have questions. It really went on slick, I hope it works that well.

Hey Shep, got a ? in reply to Shep VA, 11-26-2005 14:22:23
I was looking through the tractor pictures and saw your 1855 with a grabber on the loader. I am in the preocess of doing that to my 1755. Did you add a third remote? I cant add a third on mine cause the cab is too narrow, so I might go with a multiplier. Also, do you REALLY thing it is needed to update the axle. I kinda dont want to deal with the hassle, but I really dont want to break an axle.
Thanks

My loader works off a joystick and it is plumbed into the hydraulic system off the pump, so both my remotes are free and I just ran the hugger off of a remote. They do make joysticks that have the third remote, but I havent decided to get one yet. I always suggest running loaders off of a joystick or a valve system and not off your remotes, you have so much more control and power, you will never go back if you ever change one....

You can try running your axle and see what happens, I ran mine for about two years until I got tired of changing wheel bearings every 6 months. My 1855 would tear up wheel bearings, blow front tires, and the steering motor under the radiator is still very worn and does not steer well at road speed and leaks because of the abuse we put it through. I need to replace the entire steering box sometime. The heavier axle and bigger tires has helped a lot, but it still gets a lot of abuse. That hugger puts the weight further out in front of the tractor and that is even harder on the front axle. Plus plowing around in the mud and snow with a 2000# plus bale on the front in the winter trying to feed doesnt help it much either. I really need a 4x4 tractor to feed with. Hmmmmm I smell another project coming on..... Or maybe that is the smell of the skellitt heading my way....

Oh well.....

Did your joystick come with the loader? I take it you tapped into the hard steel line that runs on top of and behind the hydraulic resovior? Where did you plumb the return line? I was thinking of hooking the loader up like you did, but I couldnt figure out a clean way to do it. Also, what exactly did you change on your axle? You actually changed the spindles and the horizontal tube that they slide into?
Thanks for all your help.

Yeah, the joystick came with the loader set up. I plumbed in on the steel line on the back of the tractor for the pressure and then returned it to a port on the back right of the tractor. If you are standing behind the tractor there is a half inch hydraulic drain on the bottom right of the system.

On my axle I put a 2255 axle tubes into the center axle housing on the 1855. DONT DO THIS, it doesnt work. The axle halves for the 2255 are about 1/4 of an inch larger round than the 1855s are and I had to have them lathed down. It really was not worth it to do this. I would probably look into putting an 8 bolt wheatland axle or the entire 2255 axle, bolster and all under your tractor.

Good luck

Thanks for all the information...More to think about and even more to do....looks like I will have to dig around for a joystick and valve to use...they get a little expensive...guess the girlfriend will have to go without a Christmas present this year...

We had a loader on our 1755 before it puked, and we had some axel troubles also, but not always while doing loader work. The first time I was plowing and the outside tire got caught in the furrow while going around a tree stump, and it snapped the axel pin. The second time was w/ a big square on the spears, the axel on the smae side folded underneath after it snapped the pin. The third time was on the other side. I broke through some thick ice, dropped about a foot and snapped another pin.

There should be a third slot by the hyd. levers, a little bit above if I remember right. You could add a control arm in there. Otherwise, the best way to go is a seperate 3 spool control just for the loader. Running off the remotes works, but there are better ways to do it. I never did like it when our loader was run off the rear remotes.

Shep, if it isnt too much of a bother, could post some pictures of your 1855 loader plumbing set up? I too am looking at mounting a loader, but would like to use controls other than the two levers on the side. Thanks for posting this information.

Yeah, I can get some pictures of that sometime. The starter motor on that tractor is giving me some trouble and I got a new one today so it will be in the shop here in a few weeks and I will snap some pictures of it then. It is really a simple set up and it works great.

Remind me here in a few weeks if I forget.....

Here is what the muffler looks like. I shoved that up in the chrome pipe and welded them togeather at the bottom. They should both clamp to the manifold.

I just hope I dont have too much back pressure. I only drilled about 100 holes with the drill press for about an hour..... WHEW...

If this works I will have to go into business :-)

Shep, I think you are going to have too much back pressure with that setup. As someone else mentioned I don't think the noise will be too bad now that you have the turbo on there. Let us know how you make out.

Yeah I am really worried about the back pressure the more I think about this. The pipe inside is 36 inches long, 3.5 inches round and like I said I drilled about 100 7/16ths holes in it with a lot of holes on the top. I will try it like this and if it seems it is backing up the engine I will pull it back apart.

It was a neat idea, I guess I will see if it works or not.....

I didn"t see a waste gate in the picture. If you aren"t using one then the easiest way to control boost pressure is with exhaust restriction. You may want to check your boost pressure before eliminating back pressure. Remember the D585 turbos were initially put on by MM as altitude compensators (and that"s how they are listed in the parts book.

Nope, there is no wastegate on the charger. That is a really good point about the restriction, I had not thought of that. I am toying with the idea of putting a boost gauge and a pyro on the tractor so I can see what is going on with the charger. It is a fine line between boost and heat when you start turning the fuel to an engine.

This is the true turbo ment for this engine. It was actually designed for the White 2-155 I think??? that had the same engine.

The White with the D585 was the 2-150 they wre not turbo'd. I've got one +.040 bore we had it turned up to 185hp, but decided to bring it back down to 160 for longer life. The 2-135/2-155 had DT5000 Hercules at 478 cu.in. You just have to remember that it's only a 4 main engine even if the mains ARE whoppers. What I like is the bottom end pulling 6x16 on land I can drop plow in the ground at 1/3 throttle and run throttle ahead and it just pulls away.

Great looking job.

Putting a boost gauge on the intake side is almost a must in order to keep track of the turbo's health and engine performance. A pyro is a good idea as well. Keeps an eye on temps to preven turbo and related damage.

If you are worried about back pressure a boost gauge could be hooked up before the exhaust pipe to determine if and how back pressure you have.

Restrictiong the exhaust is a cheap and easy way of controlling boost, but as we all know it is not the most efficent way. However I have seen many engine that did not have a waste gate and functioned just fine. You may not even need one.

I ran our 1855 w/out a muffler while the manifold was busted, and it wasn't much louder than with a muffler, much to my surprise. I put on a pipe that brought it well above my head, and I ran it for 2 weeks before I fixed the manifold.
