The positive post on a batery is a deferent sise than the negative if you still have cabels on the tractor and they have not been bent up you may be abel to see a diferance I dont remember witch one is biger but you can tell if you get them side by side or looking at the batery

Dan, doesnt it have a battery in it now?? and which of its terminals + or - is connected to the frame now. i.e. is it Pos or Neg grounded??

Regardless which it is, if its charging fine now I would mess with it. A Genny will work at either polarity so long as its Polarized and the VR is compatible. Does it have a working ammeter?? If so and its wired correct, it should swing over to - discharge if you turn lights n ignition etc on not running, but then swing over to + charge after starting n at RPM. If it does all that and if shes charging n the battery stays up, I wouldnt mess with it. The only thing you may wanan check if you suspect it were converted at some time is the coils polarity as it should match the ground.

Check your battery hookup. The Pos battery post will go to the frame for a Pos ground. As another check, a Pos ground will have the coil + terminal connected to the distributor points.

Oliver trsactors as well as a few other major brands used positive ground systemswhen the tractors have a generator. When the alternator came along they changed to negative ground. Make sure you polarize it. Questions?
