Earlier this fall I had to shut down my 1800 when it started to bang in the engine and lost oil pressure. Well the other day I finally had time to tear into it. I dropped the pan and the rod bearing looked really good, then I pulled the head. I started looking over the head and thought the valves for cylinder 1 looked good, the valves of cylinder 2 were pretty gunked up. The intake valve on Cylinder 3 looked good, but when I looked at te exhaust valve I found my problem: There was no valve!!!!!

I looked down into the cylinder and there it was, beaten into the top of the piston. I pulled all the pistons and checked out the sleeves. The pistons, sleeves, and rob bearings look pristine, but the valves don't. I suspect that the "overhaul" done by the previous owner didn't include a valve job.

I found some OEM sleeves and pistons and once I have my diesel mechanic look at the damage will get the appropriate parts to get it back up and running. Of course that will be after I fix those darned oile leaks!!!

One word of caution,Even though the rod bearings look "pristine" i would replace them bacause the piston that had the valve beat in it had to squash the upper rod bearing where it will cause clearance problems and possibly cause bearing to "spin" later on and damage crankshaft??

Almost sounds like our 1755.... It started banging and smoking A LOT out the breather, the oil psi was gone so I shut her down before too much damage occured. Never did tear it apart, but I got it running a couple weeks later just to move it around some, and it had oil pressure then but it definatly wasn't running on all 6.....

Jim,
you wrote "when it started to bang in the engine and lost oil pressure"

I am wondering how a valve imprinted into a piston would affect oil pressure. I can understand the noise, but the oil pressure should not have been lost.
Was this the engine which needed a third of a can of ether to start it? If it was, I am wondering what the side clearance was for the top ring, or if any rings were shattered.

No this isn't the tractor that needed the ether.

The oil pressure was lost when the stem of the valve was driven through the top of the piston.

I'm with RAB on this one. No one wants to be a smart aleck but how does a broken valve or a piston with a hole in it affect oil pressure? Always want to learn as much as I can.

Thanks Pete,
There are a lot of posts on the board that just don"t have enough detail or don"t seem to add up.
Couldn"t find the original post (easily), but unless that valve sticking in the piston nigh-on stalled the engine, or was caused by the cam snapping, and losing the oil pump drive, I can see no connection at all, at this time.
